Chinese scholars' rocks, also known as scholar stones or viewing stones, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. Scholars rocks can be any color, and contrasting colors are not uncommon. The size of the stone can also be quite varied: scholars rocks can weigh either hundreds of pounds or less than one pound. Chinese scholar's rocks influenced the development of Korean suseok and Japanese suiseki.
Viewing stones are closely related art forms, each reflecting a deep respect for nature. Scholar's rocks, abstract natural stones, viewing stones are rocks of complex shapes that suggest worlds within worlds, microcosms in stone. They have been collected, and was displayed in China for centuries.
Shanghai Viewing Stone Association's mission is to promote the culture of Chinese stone appreciation, to develop stone resources, and to guide and promote stone collection, appreciation, display, research, and other activities and services.
