A cross-cultural feast of contemporary art, reflecting shifting markets and the rising influence of a new generation of collectors.
In addition to traditional art, September’s contemporary art offerings were equally remarkable. Christie’s Hong Kong’s Evening Sale presented a cross-cultural feast of modern and contemporary works.
Highlights included: Picasso’s Buste de femme, a classic portrait of Dora Maar; Zao Wou-Ki’s 17.3.63, a landmark painting from his “Hurricane Period”; David Hockney’s Table with Conversation; a large pumpkin work by Yayoi Kusama; and Walter Spies’ Pagodenlandschaft.
Other featured artists included Takashi Murakami, Park Seo-Bo, Zeng Fanzhi, Lee Ufan, as well as George Condo, Jonas Wood, and Paul Cézanne among Western masters.
While the market for traditional Chinese art appears cautious, contemporary and cross-cultural works remain highly favored by younger generations of collectors. Particularly, artists with cross-disciplinary and global appeal continue to sustain strong demand, indicating that collecting preferences are shifting toward “internationalization and diversification.” This presents further opportunities for new collectors entering the market.
