It traces how landscape imagery in Western art gradually developed from a mere background element in painting into an independent artistic subject. With the rise of Impressionism, landscape painting reached its peak in the 19th century. In the 20th and 21st centuries, however, the genre underwent profound transformations, evolving under the influence of avant-garde movements as well as the forces of industrialization. Drawn from the rich holdings of the Centre Pompidou, the exhibition features works across multiple media, including painting, installation, film, and new media. Organized into seven thematic sections across two galleries, the exhibition explores diverse representations of natural and urban environments from 1905 to the present, offering visitors a distinctive perspective through which to appreciate the evolving richness and complexity of modern and contemporary landscape art. Artists Alberto Magnelli, Lajos Tihanyi, Marc Desgrandchamps, Otto Sauer, Geneviève Asse, Gérard Fromanger, Cheikh Ndiaye, François Morellet, Henry Valensi, Nicolas Guiet, Laurent Grasso, Qiu Xiaofei, Olivier Debré, Ugo Pozzo, William Saneier, Tadashi Kawamata, Léopold Survage, Jim Dine, Georges Braque, Charles Lapicque, Zao Wou-Ki, Walter Ruttmann, Lee Kit, Christo, Pierre Moignard, André Masson, Chaïm Soutine, Chuang Che, Shirley Jaffe, Marcel Gromaire, Fang Huizi, Véronique Joumard, Daniel Buren, Josef Šíma, Leonardo Cremonini, Nicolas de Staël, André Derain, Cui Jie, Valérie Favre, Beatriz Milhazes, Xavier Veilhan, Félix Labisse, Jacques Monory, Frédéric Benrath, Jean Dubuffet, Henri Cueco, Martial Raysse, Peter Doig, Vincent Lamouroux, Daido Moriyama, Nakata Kimura, Jacques Villeglé, Zoran Mušič, Ilya Kabakov, Yves Oppenheim, Robert Delaunay, László Moholy-Nagy, Jörg Immendorff, Joan Mitchell, Jean Messagier, Maurice Estève, Philippe Cognée, and Ger van Elk.
