Featuring over 150 works across painting, sculpture, film, publications, and archival materials, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at the evolution of Chen’s creative vision and his profound impact on contemporary Chinese visual culture. Divided into four thematic sections—Formative Years, Bridge of the Soul, Elegance in Shanghai, and The Age of Grand Visuals—the exhibition spans the full arc of Chen’s artistic career. Highlights include his early realist masterpieces such as Pioneers, iconic water-town scenes like Zhujiajiao and Dusk in Suzhou, the refined Musicians and Ladies series, as well as the cinematic Dream of Old Shanghai and the experimental Tibetan Series. These works reflect Chen’s distinctive blend of realism and romanticism, and his continuous exploration of East-West cultural dialogues. Also on view is Chen’s only sculpture, Oriental Girl, presented in the museum’s mirrored third-floor gallery, alongside selected film excerpts from Evening Liaison and The Barber, showcasing his multidisciplinary reach into cinema and visual storytelling.
