Exhibition Dates: July 31, 2026 — September 6, 2026 Exhibition Venue: Liu Haisu Art Museum Address: 1609 Yan’an West Road, Changning District, Shanghai Exhibition Introduction As the earliest city in China to foster the emergence of comprehensive materials art and one with the most mature artistic ecosystem in this field, Shanghai has consistently remained at the forefront of innovation in art and media. Jointly organized by the Shanghai Artists Association, Liu Haisu Art Museum, and several other institutions, Matter · Materiality — The First Shanghai Comprehensive Materials Art Exhibition will grandly open at the Liu Haisu Art Museum on July 31, 2026. The exhibition is not only a comprehensive review of the achievements cultivated by Shanghai’s comprehensive materials art scene over many years, but also an important milestone in establishing an academic brand for Haipai art. Positioned within Shanghai’s role as a global center for scientific and technological innovation, the exhibition solicited 1,221 works from across the Yangtze River Delta region. Following rigorous selection, 146 carefully selected works were ultimately exhibited, including 105 two-dimensional works and 41 three-dimensional installations, together with 28 specially invited works by renowned artists and jury members. Taking static sculptural art as its vehicle, the exhibition explores in depth the expressive potential of diverse media across dimensions including tactile sensation, space, and light and shadow, while demonstrating the profound spiritual meanings conveyed by “matter” through the empowerment of new technologies. The exhibition layout follows a rigorous organizational logic, with four exhibition halls respectively presenting four distinct linguistic and stylistic categories: “Traditional Visual Arts,” “East-West Integration,” “New Materials in Art,” and “Technology-Enabled Art.” Together, they clearly trace the exploratory trajectory from “matter” as a physical carrier to “materiality” as a spiritual dimension.
