Exhibition Dates: April 26, 2026 – July 19, 2026 Venue: Shanghai Art Museum (China Art Museum) Address: 205 Shangnan Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China Exhibition Overview: “The superior person is not a mere vessel” is a phrase drawn from “The Analects of Confucius”, meaning that a truly cultivated person should not be limited to a single practical skill, but should embody broad vision, learning, and intellectual depth. As the title of this exhibition, it aptly summarizes Shen Peng’s lifelong artistic journey while raising an important question of how Chinese cultural traditions may be renewed in the contemporary era. This exhibition presents 116 works and archival materials, organized into four thematic sections: “Natural Traces of the Mind”, ”Learning from Many Masters“, “Literary Thought in Quiet Expression“, and ”Poetic Insight and Subtle Realization“. Together, these sections explore Shen Peng’s achievements in calligraphy, scholarship, poetry, and cultural character. Visitors will encounter representative works from different periods of his career and gain insight into how a modern master forged a distinctive language between tradition and modernity. For collectors and scholars, this exhibition holds particular value. Shen Peng’s works combine the monumentality of stele traditions with the refinement of model-book aesthetics, while embodying the literati spirit and civic responsibility of the modern intellectual. More than a presentation of artworks, the exhibition reflects the enduring vitality of Chinese calligraphic culture. Artist Biography: Shen Peng, a native of Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, also known by the studio name ”Jieju Zhu“, was one of the most influential Chinese calligraphers of the modern era.
